All The Small Things

“Ugly or Beautiful, it is the little creatures that make the world go round.
We should celebrate and appreciate them in all their wonderful diversity”
.

This is a short, intensive project we are delivering in early 2025. Funding for this project has been provided through the Farming in Protected Landscapes programme from Defra and the Kent Downs National Landscape (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

‘All The Small Things’ aims to support the farmland ecosystem from the bottom up, providing owls, kestrels and bats with opportunities for feeding, nesting and roosting. We are creating homes for these predators by installing nest boxes and creating cavities in trees, but homes are no good without feeding opportunities. To ensure plenty of food, we are also creating habitat for the invertebrates and small mammals they feed on.

We are working on five sites in the Darent Valley to:
-Build small mammal and invertebrate havens.
-Install 4 new barn owl boxes, 2 tawny owl boxes, 2 kestrel boxes and 1 box for little owls.
-Create cavities in trees for roosting bats.

This grant will also allow us to:
-Train volunteers to monitor nest boxes for the Darent Valley Barn Owl Project
-Contribute to the Mammal Society’s ‘Searching for Shrews’ project.
-Deliver guided walks and owl pellet workshops for the public.
-Install a new cellular trail camera on one of our nest boxes.
